Featured in this episode are two new and different albums from Canadian guitarist/oudist Gordon Grdina, the first with Matthew Shipp and Mark Helias while the second features his hard-hitting quartet with Russ Lossing, Oscar Noriega, and Satoshi Takeishi. Both are great and representative of the talent of Gordon Grdina. There’s music from a wonderful, free-flowing duet of violinist Jason Kao Hwang and pianist Karl Berger, heavy sounds from bassist Colin Hinton, and some “Skrontch” from New Orleans saxophonist and composer, Byron Asher. His new music brings together contemporary players from different generations with the history and culture of New Orleans. And of course there’s plenty more to like. Isn’t there always?
