There’s no particular theme in this episode, but there is a bit of an emphasis on some of today’s wonderful female improvisers. I didn’t plan it, but sometimes these shows just come together that way. Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock (now from New York but originally from Germany then London) teams up with pianist Aki Takase (from Japan and now in Germany) for the first time on record, and their mutual admiration for each other’s talents lead to some great music. Then there’s Alexandra Grimal from France, also a saxophonist with music from three different recordings. Another amazing saxophonist from Estonia, Maria Faust, takes no prisoners when she performs. I think this first time her music has been heard on OMJ. Rounding out the featured women, is Australia’s much-honoured pianist Andrea Keller. Oh, don’t worry, the guys are not left out, especially the fine trio of saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, bassist Christian Weber and drummer Michael Greiner and the Finnish trio Maisemat.
