Drummer Kate Gentile’s new “Find Letter X” is inventive, powerful and forward-thinking – definitely one of the best releases of 2023 – and it’s one of the featured releases in this edition of One Man’s Jazz. English pianist Jasper Hoiby of Phronesis fame returns to the piano trio for a new album called “Earthness”, while the veteran trio of trombonist Steve Swell, bassist Mark Tokar and drummer Klaus Kugel bring a trio of a different energy. Satoko Fujii’s piano leads a new trio called San, and Toronto’s Peripheral Vision present album #6, their live at the Tranzac, “We’ve Got Nothing”. From Europe, Dutch saxophonist Marike Van Dijk debuts “Stranded” and we check out a Polish quartet led by pianist Piotr Rachon. You’ll also hear a tribute to the multi-talented and highly respected bassist Richard Davis who passed away recently.
