The annual Vision Festival in New York is approaching (June 18-23 and streaming too), and that means one particular artist will be recognized for his/her lifetime achievements. This year the artist is bassist, composer, author and pretty much everything else, William Parker, who actually has played a central role in the development of the Vision Fest. There are two new Parker recordings being released at the same time, and one of those “Heart Trio”, debuts in this edition of One Man’s Jazz. Another artist who has contributed so much to modern creative music is trumpet player Frank London. Facing a mostly incurable form of cancer, London performs at Roulette on June 3, just before he has a bone marrow transplant. That will no doubt be an emotional night of music and support for London who has done so much to bring jazz into the Jewish music diaspora. Other new releases of note sampled are the splendid trio of pianist Izumi Kimura, bassist Barry Guy & drummer Gerry Hemingway, the Belgian band Mojo Jojo, The Stateless Trio featuring saxophonist Rick
Countryman, the Italian duo of drummer Tiziano Tononi & violinist Emanuele Parrini with friends, Dutch guitarist Prashant Samlal, and saxophonist Alfredo Colon. There’s much to like in this episode of One Man’s Jazz.
