I try to keep things fluid on One Man’s Jazz and incorporate various specials and themes rather than just the simple playlist – not that there’s anything wrong with those. This episode is the result of my curiosity about some of the nominees for the prestigious German Jazz Prize so you’ll hear music from bassist Felix Henkelhausen’s Quintet (Album of the Year), Økse (International Album of the Year), clarinetist Federico Calcagno Octet (International Large Ensemble), Bastian Stein (Brass Player of the Year), and Training Duo with Ruth Goller (Album Of The Year). All worthy nominees. Other new albums include Jordi Cassagne & Barbastelle from Belgium, the Esthesis Quartet with guest Bill Frisell, Finland’s Jussi Kanaste’s debut as a leader, first meeting of Larry Ochs, Joe Morris & Charles Downs, Vinny Golia’s 2024 Quintet, and from Los Angeles.
