More great new music arrived in the past week: Duos: trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith & pianist/composer Vijay Iyer team up for a commentary on present day society on their latest duo album “Defiant Life”; South Korean pianist Eunhye Jeong & bassist Michael Bisio; and “Pictish Spaghetti”, a curious guitar and bass session with Graeme Stephen & Roberto Cassani done in an old reclaimed school in the Scottish wilds. Trios: pianist Anders Filipsen from Denmark, saxophonist Eric Shorter, pianist Alister Spence from Australia, and three of the freest saxophonists – Ivo Perelman, Ken Vandermark & Joe Mcphee: Quartets: Tisziji Munoz’ Quantum Blues, Irish tenor saxophonist Michael Buckley, and drummer Nils Agnas from Sweden. Plus plenty more, including a new updated, better sounding “Frequency Equilibrium Koan Expanded” from guitarist Michael Gregory Jackson.
