New in this episode are five very worthy releases from other lands: German saxophonist Fabian Dudek has been tabbed a rising star and it’s easy to see why on his new release “Distant Skies We Dream”; the well-established bassist from Denmark Jasper Hoiby’s back with his 3Elements for the new “LikeWater”’ and there are two debuts, one by Trafiklys, the duo of saxophonist Joao Gato and vibraphonist Duarte Ventura, and thanks to Joao Gato’s heads-up, The Gatherers present “Cradled Cravings”; the quartet features three musicians from the Balkans and a Brazilian; and free jazz veteran reed player Rudi Mahall from Germany teams up the vigorous Trio Ouat to make his first ever album playing only Bb clarinet. Also new, Dave Douglas’ Gifts quartet which features James Brandon Lewis, avant garde pianist John Blum trades licks with the venerable and venerated saxophonist Marshall Allen, and Orrin Evans, Eric Revis and Nasheet Waits (aka Tarbaby) finally release their first trio only album.
