Drummer Jerry Granelli says he’s not one for revisiting music from the past, but he changed his mind for his latest album “The Jerry Granelli Trio Plays Vince Guaraldi and Mose Allison”. The Halifax-based veteran played in Guaraldi’s trio early on (remember the music for the Peanuts’ series?) and spent decades backing Mose Allison. Armed with a pianist and bassist (Jamie Saft & Bradley Christopher Jones) who look at music the way he does, Granelli decided to record this album of very recognizable tunes, injecting his own flavours along the way. Also on the show this week, some powerful music from Sweden by pianist Lisa Ullén and her two-drummer, four-bassist band, strong ensemble playing from Italian bassist Federico Marchesano, and sizzling drum work from Argentina’s Sergio Verdinelli. You’ll also hear something from a new Ingrid Laubrock/Kris Davis album, a preview of a new work by David Binney & Kenny Wollesen, and more from the trumpet of Dennis Gonzalez. Lastly, Vijay Iyer revisits the 2003 controversial album “In What Language”. Enjoy!
