I think I’ve mentioned before how lucky and blessed I am to be able to present such great music every week. There’s a seemingly never-ending stream of releases to choose from each week. This episode is a perfect example, dominated by new music featuring saxophonists. Finland’s Jorma Tapio is back with a new band focused on the music of icon drummer Edward Vesala; Argentina’s Camila Nebbia teams up with string master Killick Hinds who’s playing the unusual, H’arpeggione; Italy’s Robert Ottaviano with a new quartet Pinturas; Portugal’s Jose Lencastre is joined by bassist Hernani Faustino and pedal steel guitar virtuoso Susan Alcorn for a brilliant album; Paul Flaherty blows the roof off in a wild free jazz session, and English legend Elton Dean’s music from 19998 is heard for the first time.. There’s more from the trios Brewand Tyshawn Sorey and Peter Brotzmann too. Add in a sublime trio recording by cellist Daniel Levin, pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro and bassist Hernani Faustino, drummer Scott Clark’s sextet and a preview of Darcy James Argue& the Secret Society upcoming release and you can see why I’m excited.
