Slipping into a new month with five shows, this week’s One Man’s Jazz has some excellent new releases highlighted by the first two from a new label, Tao Forms. Drummer Whit Dickey is the new artistic director and the mission is to present free jazz artists. The first albums come from Dickey’s own trio and a solo effort from pianist Matthew Shipp. Great beginnings, indeed. Canadian alto saxophonist Francois Carrier loves to travel and collaborate with musicians wherever he lands – this time it’s in the town of Ogose in Japan. His “Japan Suite” features some of the best of the Japanese avant garde scene. Veteran French horn maestro Vincent Chancey’s new album, “The Spell” gets sampled as does Gordon Grdina’s The Marrow, drummer Abbey Rader’s latest, and Aussie big band, Vanessa Perica Orchestra. Add some Zappa (not Frank, his nephew saxophonist Stanley), the French duo Octocrazy, and a stunning work from singer Sara Serpa, and the standard is set for July.
