Sometimes interesting recordings are sent to me from unexpected places and/or people. Guitarist Dave “Knife” Fabris, who I don’t know, passed along a live recording he did in 2006 at The Bimhuis In Amsterdam with the much-respected pianist, composer and educator, Ran Blake. Fabris is one of the few collaborators of Blake. The album is a feature in this episode. Other new recordings arriving come from saxophonist Tim Berne & new trio, Swiss drummer Clemens Kuratle & Ydivide, the Heart Trio (William Parker, Cooper-Moore & Hamid Drake) and a studio performance of the music on their earlier Heart Trio release, more from Stephen Gauci’s “Live At Scholes Street Studio” series, the excellent trio of pianist Russ Lossing with Masa Kamaguchi & Billy Mintz, and pianist Satoko Fujii’s first encounter with a string section.
