Sometimes in the course of progamming these shows, it happens that when the final playlist is finished, there’s a tilt in a certain direction. In most cases this is very unintentional. It must be some sort of subliminal direction to make it so. Or it’s perhaps it’s just “coincidenza” as they would say in Italy. New releases from that country include “The Uncle (Gianni Bifronte)” from drummer Francesco Cusa. It’s a two-parter with the same tunes interpreted by a trio with pianist Gianni Lenoci (a tribute actually as sadly Lenoci passed unexpectedly in September last year) and his band The Assassins. The improvising duo, DST, has a new one with added trumpeter Gabriele Mitelli, and you’ll hear two tunes from saxophonist Fabio Delvo while another prominent Italian artists, Piero Bittolo Bon, opens the show with his band, Bread And Fox. Definitely not from Italy is Danish saxophonist making his OMJ debut on two different albums, one with the Maluba Orchestra, the other his band 5 Go Adventuring Again.
California bassist Lisa Mezzacappa has a high quality new release called “Cosmicomics”, and like her previous works, comes with inspiration for her compositions. This time it’s the work of Italo Calvino’s short story collection of the same name. And this show finishes up music for Black History Month with more from Christian McBride, Denis Colin Trio and Matana Roberts.
