February is Black History Month, so I managed to slot in a couple of appropriate albums; one features the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble paying tribute to one of the most important Black musicians – Don Cherry. His work and spirit covered many different genres, and in some circles is considered the father of world music. The other piece of music comes from the band, Juju, a hard-pounding sextet out of the San Francisco scene of the 1970s. Juju, like many other groups was heavily involved in the Black Nationalist Movement. You’ll hear something from the quirky Boston-based Club D’Elf’s reissue of their first album to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Swiss bassist Lukas Traxel, the Norwegian brother team of Isach & Lauritz Skeidsvoll, and a first time meeting of two of Japan’s elite free jazz players; pianist Satoko Fujii and guitarist Otomo Yoshihide. And from perhaps one of the most unique releases in recent years, English vocalist Julie Tippetts improvises over music played by her late husband, pianist Keith Tippett on his 1997 solo European tour.
