There’s a bit of a double theme to this edition: poetry and Black History month, and both are combined in new music from Christopher Parker, Kelly Hurt & the No Tears Project, the trio of Fred Moten, Brandon Lopez & Gerald Cleaver, and a venerable track from Archie Shepp. The veteran British saxophonist John Surman’s 1969 ensemble is heard on a first-time release from ECM and saxophonist Rob Brown displays his powerful chops on the new “Walkabout”. There’s more from the upcoming Young Mother’s release and from Italy, Roots Magic clarinetist Alberto Poppola goes all-blues on his new solo recording, and a pair of celebrated artists, vibraphonist Sergio Armaroli & trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini interpret the music of Albert Ayler.
