Interesting new albums to explore this episode. Bassist Joe Fonda’s “Eyes On The Horizon” is an album I’m touting as one of the best recordings of 2024, and another new Fonda release “Joe Fonda & Bass Of Operations” is not that far behind. It’s a totally different approach than the first one, which just goes to show the far-reaching talents of Mr. Fonda. Both albums are available at the Fundacja Sluchaj page on Bandcamp.com. Portugal’s Robalo Music label dropped off a pair of albums that maintain the high standard of creative music coming from Lisbon, a pair of quartets called Garfo and Talagbusao, while I dug up a piece of music myself from a first-meeting set by pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and drummer Joey Baron at the 2006 Willisau Festival. The Quebec duo of electric bassist Éric Normand and guitarist Louis Beaudoin-de la Sablonnière are Brûlez les meubles; they usually add guests to their sessions and this time on “Folio #5 they have pianist Marianne Trudel and Ingrid Laubrock. No guests on the closing piece though, just the new James Brandon Lewis Trio with a preview of the upcoming “Apple Cores”. Your ears will also like the rest. Enjoy!
