It never gets boring in the One Man’s Jazz laboratory where weekly shows are concocted from the finest of materials. This week’s show is another joint filled with some amazing new albums, so much so that it’s back to its usual length of 3 hours. Perhaps the most interesting is the last track, so perhaps illogically that’s the first recording to write about. The esteemed flautist, AACM adherent and Afro-futurist Nicole Mitchell has brought that Chicago sound for which she’s known and melded it the music of Mali, led by kora player Ballake Sissoko. “Bamako Chicago Sound System” should get you up and dancing. The equally eminent heart of avant garde in New York, bassist William Parker is in fine form on a new release with saxophonist Jon Irabagon and drummer Andrew Barker. There’s lots of fire in this one. Toronto’s Lina Allemano’s trumpet leads the way for her German trio Ohrenschmaus on “Flip Side”, while Swedish vibraphone star Mattias Stahl leads his own trio on “Brain Drain” and he also shows his formidable skill on soprano sax. Yet another trio, clarinetist Jason Stein’s threesome is in command on his new “Anchors”. One of the true power couples in the avant realm also have a new release – Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey; they’re streaming duos during the pandemic paved the way for “Brink”. I’ll leave the rest for your ears to discover.
