If you came to this page looking for same-old, mellow jazz for your wine and cheese party, you landed on the wrong place. One Man’s Jazz is about creativity, pushing the envelope, and recognizing the musicians who make such music. This episode, #1372, is a perfect example. It’s got hard-nosed, full-blowing from the players who have set the stage for a lot of this music today: William Parker, Charles Gayle & Milford Graves, known as the rarely-heard Webo Trio, or Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre holding forth in the ‘70s NY Loft scene. All of which leads into present day artists like trumpeter Luis Vicente, saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, James Brandon Lewis, and Carlos Bica. As usual, there is plenty of music from artists from other countries that follow the same creative path like the new trio Sulida from Norway, and as often happens on One Man’s Jazz, some poetry featured in a St. Louis-based free ensemble that features the master drummer, Ra Kalam Moses.
I hope you enjoy the show.
