There’s a lot to love in this jam-packed show, starting with Italian drummer Tiziano Tononi’s “Winter Counts – We’ll Still Be Here”, a stunning project is focused on his interest and concern for Native Americans. Australysis, a long-time source of experimental and innovation in Australia, debuts “Dualling”, while drummer Obed Calvaire turns to his Haitian background for inspiration. From Europe comes the trio of guitarist Hasse Poulsen/trumpeter Tomasz Dabrowski/saxophonist Fredrik Lundin, Swedish pianist Lisa Ullén, solo and with her Space Trio, drummer Axel Filip with pianist Margaux Oswald, and the re-issue of a terrific band called Batoru. Saxophonist Maria Grand and pianist Marta Sanchez is heard for the first time, and one track probably heard countless times, “Afric Firebird” by Jan Garbarek introduces a new series of vinyl reissues by ECM Records. The show finishes with a classic piece from Alice Coltrane’s new “Live At Carnegie Hall”.
