When the brilliant saxophonist Marty Ehrlich formed Trio Exaltation with bassist John Hebert and drummer Nasheet Waits back in 2018, it was a continuation of Ehrlich’s penchant for trios. He feels they are perfect situations for getting down to the essence of their music. Ehrlich’s new release with Trio Exaltation is strong evidence that he’s found the way. “This Time” is excellent and the feature album in this edition. A pair of equally heralded saxophonists are central to two other new releases: Netherland’s Ab Baars with the band Loot on their debut and Sweden’s Mats Gustafsson on “Traces” by Cosmic Ear, a quintet with Don Cherry in mind. Belgian drummer Teun Verbruggen drops by with his band, Blind IO and the English/Swedish trio Enemy introduces their new album, “Fiend”. Much great music for your ears. Hope you like the show.
