Like last week’s taste of recent releases on the Clean Feed label, this episode sticks to that pattern with a look at new albums from ESP-Disk and NoBusiness Recods. From ESP you’ll hear some of the live reunion concert by English pianist Peter Lemer’s Quintet, reprising music from a recording back in 1966, and the prolific saxophonist, Ivo Perelman. NoBusiness continues its pattern of putting out new sessions and re-releases of older recordings mixed with music from unexpected places. Another English band – Evan Parker, Barry Guy and Paul Lytton – is a highlight of the NoBusiness albums; and bass clarinetist Ziv Taubenfeld and trombonist Steve Swell play tunes from their new albums.
Speaking of bass clarinet, you’ll also hear a track from the great Louis Sclavis’ new album for ECM, while multi-reedist Steffen Schorn, who likely has a bass clarinet in his arsenal, appears leading a rarely-heard saxophone sextet. Throw in the highly original German band, Hook Line & Sinker, a formidable new release from pianist Russ Lossing’s trio, and Cráneo De Jade from Mexico, and the newer releases in this show shine. The rest is mighty good too.
