The dial must have been set to “eclectic” because when I looked at the completed playlist my only thought was that this show is all over the stylistic map. For instance, there’s the Simon Nabatov Quintet’s new “Last Minute Theory” that extends group improvisation to new limits, Petter Eldh’s Koma Saxo back with a new definition of improv and electronics, rapper and poet Mike Ladd working just with a guitarist using open tuning, an historical track from Canadian drummer Claude Ranger whose 2000 disappearance has never been solved, guitarists from Finland (Olli Hirvonen) and Sweden (Henrik Olsson), live free-jazz from The Bushwick Series at the Bushwick Public House in Brooklyn, and further exploration of the cultural influences of Puerto Rico from alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon. And that’s just part of a very entertaining three hours of music. Hey, I might even listen to this myself!

The Village Voice called William Parker “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.” It’s easy to concur with such a statement. Parker has been at the forefront of creative music, leading his own bands, working with the likes of Cecil Taylor and Don Cherry, publishing six books and teaching and mentoring, as well as recording at least 150 albums. A recent release, “Live/Shapeshifter”, is the feature of this episode of OMJ. Parker leads his quartet, In Order To Survive, through an amazing set of tunes. In Order To Survive came to prominence about twenty years ago, then kind of disappeared until a reunion at the 2012 Vision Festival and then a recording in 2016. To celebrate post-session, Parker booked Shapeshifter Lab and the performance was recorded live.
Also new this week, more great music from Portugal from trumpeter Gonçalo Marques with Jacob Sacks and Cat In A Bag, Guillermo Klein & Los Gauchos, saxophonist Tim Ries’ long-delayed “Life Changes”, and Polish bassist Kamila Drabek and her trio, Tercet Kamili Drabek.

If your tastes run to the “creative”, “avant garde”, “experimental”, or “free form”, there’s plenty of non-traditional music in this episode. Canadian Paul Plimley has long been at the forefront of free jazz, both in Canada and internationally. Sensaround is an Australian-Scottish trio that delves into improvised sound creation and ambient. Portuguese drummer Joao Lencastre’s “Parallel Realities” focuses on free expression of smaller groups within the larger, while the quartet, From Wolves To Whales – saxophonist Dave Rempis, trumpeter Nate Wooley, bassist Pascal Niggenkemper and drummer Chris Corsano show how powerful group improvisation can be.
There’s no disputing the place that Evan Parker occupies in the free jazz realm. On his latest release for Intakt, he’s joined by turntablists and electronicists as they react and interpret various samplings of Parker’s music collection, while the amazing Englishman plays with abandon. In contrast, another saxophonist, David Leon, manipulates his horn to experiment with pitch, texture, and microtonalism.
Balancing on the edge of “free”, the combination of some AACM members and two brilliant French rhythm players (Denis Fournier drums and Bernard Santacruz, bass) is another highlight of this episode of One Man’s Jazz, which happens to be the 1st year anniversary of making the show available on mixcloud.com and allaboutjazz.com., a year that’s flown by .

This is one of those episodes with plenty of “bounce” – as in bouncing around the planet. But there’s plenty of rhythmic punch too, as several of the recordings this week are drummer-led sessions: Joao Lencastre (with his Communion Trio), Harris Eisenstadt, Gard Nilssen & his Acoustic Unity, Kahil El’Zabar from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Max Andrzejewski & Hütte (paying tribute to Robert Wyatt) and Whit Dickey. Lisbon saxophonist Desiderio Lázaro drops by, as do a phenomenal trio, the Legendary Trio, of Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee and Susan Alcorn, bassist Charlie Kirchen and the Kingston Trio. No, not that one, the Damien Kingston Trio from Hobart in Tasmania. Top that off with a Spinal Tap piece layered on to an Ornette Coleman tune – from the Michael Leonhart Orchestra – and I think you get the idea.
