There’s a heavy European flavour to this episode as we mine the current scene in eleven different countries. Two albums on the Hungarian BMC label introduce BMC’s latest round of releases: pianist Aki Takase(Germany) & her band, Japanic, and saxophonist Istvan Grensco & his Collective Special 5 (Hungary), which features the great American reed man, Ken Vandermark. It’s a first time meeting for these two tenor titans of today. German drummer Peter Kahlenborn and his trio tear it up on their “Vesica Pisces”, while French saxophonist Sylvain Cathala’s latest is a definite gem. From Denmark, you’ll hear the quartet, Ocean Fanfare, with the first of a trilogy dealing with biodiversity, economic theory, techno and spontaneous composition. There’s a whole lot more for you as well so kick back and relax while we do the driving.

Creativity must be recognized, particularly the kind that endures. The AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) continues to this day, just as it did over 50 years ago, inspiring, pushing forward, and setting the standard for creative music. Only the players change. The premier performing group of the AACM today is the AACM Great Black Music Ensemble, and it’s a joy to hear music on their new recording “Live At The Currency Exchange Vol. 1″.
Also in this episode you’ll hear the Emile Parisien Quartet, Mick Rossi , Le Rex from Switzerland and music from two important independent free jazz labels: Relative Pitch and Iluso. As is the norm on One Man’s Jazz there’s much, much more over the course of this three hours of music.

My music GPS keeps pointing to bassist Carlos Bica for riveting music. His new release “I Am The Escaped One” finds him heading in a different direction than the usual guitar trio. This time he’s working with German saxophonist Daniel Erdmann and turntablist DJ Illvibe. The result is captivating. Bica is now living in Germany but he’s originally from Portugal, while another fine bassist from that country but living in Rotterdam – Gonçalo Alemida — figures prominently in two trio releases on the Clean Feed label: “Cannicula Rosa” One from The Selva and “Opus Caementicum” by Cement Shoes. From France, a track from a live trio set led by saxophonist Baba Andrew Lamb stirs up the pot.
There are more trios to check out as well: Michael Bisio, Kirk Knuffke & Fred Lonberg-Holm joined forces to create a moving tribute to the late Mike Panico, owner of Relative Pitch Records, while the Polish Quantum Trio debut their new release “Red Fog”, Stephan Crump, Ingrid Laubrock and Cory Smythe contribute a track from “Channels”, their latest on Intakt, and Russ Lossing with Michael Formanek and Gerald Cleaver turn familiar standards upside down on “Changes”.

There’s a wide variety of great tunes this episode: Club D’Elf kicks it off with the title track to their latest live set, saxophonist Muriel Grossmann and her quartet acknowledge the mystical path of John Coltrane’s music, the New York Free Quartet‘s “Dream Time” marks their return to releasing excellent work, and the very influential guitarist Michael Gregory Jackson’s latest debuts. There’s more, of course, from Swiss tenor player Marc Jufer and trio, another trio of Frenchmen Stéphan Oliva and Sebastien Boisseau teamed with Tom Rainey, and another hit from Dustin Laurenzi’s Moondog tribute (and Moondog himself!).
