After two shows dedicated to specific themes, it’s time to dig into a growing backlog of new releases, and there are some excellent albums this week: heralded alto saxophonist Steve Lehman plays the music of one-time mentor Anthony Braxton on his latest, and it’s powerful as hell. Pianist Satoko Fujii’s new “Dream A Dream” is terrific and she and her Tokyo Trio will no doubt be playing music from the album as they tour North America later this month. After a long partnership leading the Fully Celebrated Orchestra for almost 20 years, saxophonist Jim Hobbs and bassist Timo Shanko, finally made a duo recording; “The Depression Tapes” is far from depressing. From Europe, new tunes come from Belgian drummer Stephane Galland, Swedish pianist Mathias Landaeus, the KCT Trio from Belgium, the trio Mein Einzinger Freund, an unreleased gem by the late, great pianist John Taylor. Add in some historic William Parker music, the Israeli trio Kadawa, and a big finish with guitarist Nels Cline and his new quartet, and your ears should be smiling for weeks. Enjoy!
