The confluence of improvisation and poetry has become more and more prevalent in recent years. In 2022, New York poet Fred Moten released a powerful album, collaborating with bassist Brandon Lopez and drummer Gerald Cleaver. Now Moten and Lopez continue their journey with the excellent “Revision”, the feature recording this week. Right behind that, and no less brilliant is “NuMBq, from bassist Michael Bisio and a new quartet that features viola, English horn and drums. Bisio calls this one a cross between Third Stream and Fire Music. There are two new and highly contrasting albums from trumpet players – Jacob Wick’s somewhat relaxed “A Veces Me … Espejo Y Pienso En Ti” and Natsuki Tamura’s wild first time encounter with Japanese guitar legend Keiji Haino. The popular Finnish saxophonist Timo Lassy and trio are releasing a live album in front of an enthusiastic audience in Helsinki, and ECM is releasing two new albums, the Julia Hülsmann Quartet’s “Under The Surface” and a re-release of keyboard genius Rainer Brüninghaus’ 1981 gem “Freigeweht”.
