Noted new releases sampled in this edition come from the very well-respected guitarist Ben Monder. His new “Planetarium”, due out in September, is classic Monder – meandering, soaring into the ether, exploratory, unique. Ben’s been working on completing this project for ten years. French saxophonist Emile Parisien has always been a favourite at my house and his new “Let Them Cook” has the usual intensity that Parisien’s quartet albums always do. Portuguese drummer Joao Lencastre sets aside original music on his new release, jumping instead into music by Ornette, Nichols & Monk, while the trio Brom from Germany stays on their usual path of strong improvisation around saxophonist Alexander Bierbach’s sketches. You’ll hear Dominican Republic drummer Ivanna Cuesta’s debut as well, and a whole lot more of inspiring music. I thank you sincerely for taking the time to listen.
