Back when this show was pitched to then-newly organized CKUW, I had contemplated calling the show Jazz World. Plans and ideas changed, but I think I have over the years showed that there is much great music being played by artists all over the world. I think today's show epitomizes that as well as any, with several tracks from Polish artists,as well as music from Italy, Austria, France, the UK and NorthAm. Featured is Canadian and world traveller, saxophonist Michael Blake. Enjoy! |

With a long weekend upon us, perhaps people will be kicking back and relaxing, so I thought I'd just play a lot of music with minimal interruptions (especially if the esteemed studio computer is down again), just basic top-of-set intros, and let the three hours pass as musically as possible. Note: I didn't say anything about the music being of a "relaxed" nature. |

Peter Van Huffel Once again, some great Canadian talent didn't get to play at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival. Please, someone open their ears!!!!!!! Peter Van Huffel is a saxophonist from Kingston Ontario -- now based in Berlin -- and he led a stellar quartet on a recent tour of most of the Canadian festivals. This is music that is challenging, different, very well written and exceedingly well played by Peter, Jesse Stacken on piano, Miles Perkin on bass (he's now based in Berlin too) and Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer. There'll be more music from Norway and the UK via Denmark, and a sneak preview of Toronto's Quinsin Nachoff's new Rhodes quartet. |

Would it matter to you if One Man's Jazz moved to a different time slot, say an evening? I've been wanting to move out of Saturday afternoon for years, but there has never been an opportunity. And there likely isn't now, but do you have a preference, do you care, or do you not care because you use the download facility....? Let me know. Send me an email . |

One Man's Jazz was the number one streamed show at CKUW for the month of June and number two for July. Thanks for checking out the show and using the archive facility at CKUW. It's a bit pokey (we need to switch servers but there's a big cost factor if we switch to a more efficient server), but keep on accessing this show or other shows, please. OMJ is not doing too badly for show downloads either; it's usually in the top ten each month. Remember, you can also stream or download individual hours or save them as podcasts too. |

Great new article from Popmatters.com by Will Layman about the future of "jazz" or whatever one should be calling this music today. |
